Born in Anderson, Indiana and raised in the Atlanta suburb of Jonesboro, Georgia, Senior Chief Etchison joined the Navy’s Delayed Entry Program in December 1991. He graduated from Jonesboro Senior High School in June 1992 and officially entered the United States Navy on December 01, 1992. Upon completion of boot camp at RTC Orlando, he attended Electronics Technician “A” School Phase 1 (Basic Electricity and Electronics) at SSC Orlando. He then moved on to ET “A” School Phase 2 (Advanced Electronics) at SSC Great Lakes and fully completed ET “A” School in February of 1994. He then moved on to FTC San Diego, where he completed the “C” Schools for the FFG-7 Navigation Pipeline, AN/UYK-62 (SNAP II), and AN/SPS-49 Air Search RADAR System.
In November 1994, Senior Chief Etchison reported aboard the USS John A. Moore (FFG-19) in San Diego. While aboard the USS John A. Moore he deployed to the Western Pacific and also deployed in support of Counter Drug Operations in the South Pacific. His next assignment was at the White House Communications Agency, a selectively manned joint service agency, recruiting the top 5% of personnel from all the services. He deployed on 48 missions as a Senior Radio Technician in support of the President, Vice President, First Lady, and the United States Secret Service. Senior Chief Etchison checked aboard Fleet Combat Training Center Atlantic (FCTCLANT) Dam Neck in December 2000. He served as Leading Petty Officer for the RADAR/IFF Maintenance Division prior to his selection as a Chief Petty Officer in June of 2003.
In November 2003, he completed the Combat Systems Senior Enlisted course reported aboard USS Simpson (FFG-56) where he served as the Leading Chief Petty Officer for CE and OC Divisions. While aboard the USS Simpson he deployed on two Standing Naval Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT) NATO deployments. Next he reported to staff duty at Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC). Senior Chief served in the N6 department as the Staff Communicator and as the Force Tactical Communications Action Officer. He was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer during his tour at NECC. After being selected for assignment as a Command Senior Chief, he served as the Command Senior Chief at Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Des Moines, Iowa from October 2009 through June 2013. In August 2013 he reported aboard the Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Orlando, Florida to serve as Command Senior Chief for over 700 Active Duty and Reserve Sailors.
In March of 2015 Senior Chief Etchison retired from active duty Naval service prior to accepting a civilian position with the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NROTC) program at Iowa State University. He currently works as the Supply Technician for the Iowa State University Naval ROTC. Senior Chief Etchison is a graduate from the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), the Navy Good Conduct Medal (seven awards), the Presidential Service Badge, and various other unit and service awards. He resides in Ankeny, Iowa with his wife and daughter.
